The Learning Garden was officially dedicated to Windermere Elementary School in a simple ceremony consisting of sponsors, volunteers and community members. The dedication occurred approximately one year after the first project began with the wood for the pergola being delivered. Read more on that here. Attendees included representatives from the Board of Directors for Orange County Public Schools, Principal Greer, Vice Principal Dr. Trawick, Mayor Bruhn, PTA President Michaal Rossi and former president Sue Ann Reichard, Windermere Garden Club, Winter Garden Bloom and Grow, Windermere Tree Board, Orange Observer. Sponsors attending included Millenium Grounds and Water, Skorman Construction, Tom West Blueberries, Eco Property Solutions, and Monterey Mushroom in Zellwood, Florida.
Principal Greer started off the event with a brief speech which included a personal favorite quote of mine by classic poet Cicero which says, ” if you have a garden and a library that is all you need”.
Students in the chorus were led by Mrs. Frank in a song entitled “Agents of Change”.
Mrs. Schultes provided some teacher perspective on how a garden can impact learning for of elementary school children. Limitless opportunities!
Amalie Skorman and Stephanie Gisler-Rashid concluded the speeches, mostly with tears, and grateful hearts.
The remainder of the day was spent with all of the students in the school touring the Garden at different time slots, planting a plant in a pot to take home, then tasting a sample of blueberries provided by Tom West in Ocoee.
